In order to put a more ‘human touch’ on all of our content, my wife and I will be bringing you a series of podcasts to show you what were up to, what were thinking, (and I have decided to take the extreme step of putting part of my life in this blog). I am putting my diet and exercise program on a page called ‘Whats Rick Doing Now?’

Pat has been taking vitamins, herbs and other holistically related food supplements for many years. Through allot of research (just ask me, some sections of our entire library are taken up with holistic health books) Alternative health practitioners and some trial and error she has formulated a combination that works very well for her. We will list her exact Morning Mix on the page below for you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to go to our contact page and send us an e-mail. Thanks, Rick and Pat.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
Pat and I have been busy. So busy as a matter of fact that we have neglected our podcast shows, and thats not good. Here is what we are going to do. We will run a thirty minute podcast show every week for you. I have also decided that in order to set a proper example and follow our theme name of ‘healthy tech talk’ that we put more of a human touch to it. Thats why I am going to blog about my diet (what I eat) my exercise (sometimes the lack thereof) and what I do on a daily basis in order to keep this middle aged geek sane, happy and healthy.

You will notice that on the video section of the show we have decided to mix things up a bit and present a combination of free form style podcasts (that means I make a show list summary and lightly touch on each point, going to different web sites and discussing them) and then balance it out with a slightly different approach to delivering your media content. Quite often I will sit down with my notebook computer and compile a series of thoughts, stories or research that need to follow a more structured approach than just ‘winging’ it in front of the camera. When I get excited about something and take the time to write about it, I don’t want to lose anything in the process. If I have a loose guideline in front of me, and start having a casual conversation with my listeners, I may skip a few points that are very important because one bit of information ties in with the next bit of information to form a cohesive idea or concept.

You may see me reading from a piece of paper one day, and then flying by the seat of my pants the next day, so if you like or hear something that piques your interest, let me know which show you heard it on, and I can offer more of that type of content to the listeners. Who knows? You may just like the combinations of information gathering and delivery we have put together. Instead of blogging on a different subject every time I blog, I am going to do one longer blog per week, and cap it off with the show (both video and audio) at the top of the blog. In that way, you can see all of my ramblings on one blog page so you don’t have to chase all over the place looking for what we’ve put together that week.

Now, you deserve an explanation as to why we haven’t been here for some time. I have a full time job as well as this blog. It has been difficult to put the show of my dreams up on the internet when I have to spend over eight hours per day away from the office. We have launched another new show in conjunction with this one, and it is called eFlexonics, and can be found at www.eflexonics.com it’s all about the small city we live in called Abbotsford. It is situated in the Fraser Valley, in British Columbia, Canada, right next to the US border. I felt the need to contribute back to my community in the form of a podcast show and will be working to support the local businesses within my local area. Now, that begs the question: Rick, if you didn’t have time to do a thirty minute podcast show for healthy tech talk, then how are you going to do two thirty minute shows for two separate concepts? You must be a little crazy in the head, right? Yes. Crazy like a fox.

I felt that something was missing in my podcast shows, and I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Here it is. Because I have different sides to my personality, I needed two completely separate shows that can reflect my need for communication. Some of the information can be used in a cross platform fashion. Healthy Tech Talk is designed to keep stress levels down for the computer user. I just completed a blog and podcast show called ‘Back up, Back up, Back up’ and it deals with why it is so important to back up data, and why you need some sort of off site storage. We also discuss my latest toy, the Apple Itouch, and compare it with my ‘dumbphone’ the Samsung Instinct. We hope you like the new format, and will be asking for your opinions, insights and suggestions in the future in order to bring you the best podcast shows possible. Until next time, this is Rick and Pat wishing you well. Stay safe, and we will blog at you later.

I love, and I mean LOVE products that are both holistic in nature, and recommended by doctors. This product looks very intriguing. I have not personally tested it because I sleep like a log and do not suffer in any way from insomnia. My wife however, is a lighter sleeper. She can get to sleep quite quickly, but wakes up from time to time if she heres a noise, so, she really doesn’t have an issue sleeping. It’s more of an annoyance than anything else. The video on the page is interesting and deserves a second look. If you suffer from insomnia, check this product out. Click here for the link.

Sleep should be refreshing, invigorating, healing and peaceful. If at least one of those four words doesn’t appear in your dreams then perhaps you have been searching for some time for an answer. This product does not rely on drugs on any level. What it actually does is help you to re-program your breathing habit patterns and allows you to gently focus on drifting off to sleep. I am very familiar with this type of behavior because it is the core behind guided meditation. There are many things that must come together in order to obtain a really good nights sleep.

In the future, I will do either a blog or a podcast on our Plasma bed that we bought about four years ago, and I can tell you that the mattress can make a huge difference as well.

PLEASE NOTE: WINDOWS STEADY STATE DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 7 AT THE MOMENT

I promised that I would bring you anything that I could think of that made sense to computer users if it helped take away some technical stress. Here is one little gem called Windows Steady State, and it looks very interesting on the surface. Lets take a closer look, shall we? Click here to read a review that CNET did on this program. I love CNET.

This is a program to keep some users locked in if you have multiple users on one PC. Lets face it, sometimes your notebook you use can get passed around to other people, family members, or your dog could accidentily place his paw on certain keys, infiltrate your security settings, and erase some of your files. Here is a very positive review of Windows Steady State from Maximum PC’s website. This a a foolproof way to restore your operating system to a rock solid state.

Another review from Download Squad.com is also very favorable.

Here is the official link to Windows Steady State. Give it a whirl. This piece of software may just be what your looking for if you need to have your PC’s pass through many hands.

The internet is a glorious place to visit. Just look at all of the wonderful content you can enjoy. I just watched an amazing video from the Twit web site when they were at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this January and it was fantastic. They showcased some incredibly cutting edge technology and brought it to consumers quickly, professionally and very well packaged for the listener/viewer. We are launching a new concept through the healthy tech talk network, and it is called ‘eflexonics‘

Our intention is to showcase business owners and their products who can help manage and or reduce technically related stress that is all too common in our world today. We live in Abbotsford British Columbia, Canada and will be showcasing local businesses between Whistler to Hope for you to enjoy. There are some great people out there with educational and support systems that really want to talk to you, so thats exactly what we plan on doing. We are taking our audio/video equipment on the road, down the trail, over the glen and into your homes to search for the best user content that can make you more productive, happy and relaxed when you use your PC or other technically based equipment.

Click here to visit us at www.eflexonics.com
Thank you so much for your support. Rick and Pat.
(the above link for eflexonics does not work right now, we switched hosting companies and are in a transition period ‘which means at the moment, we are being held hostage by the losing registrar’ and will have this link up within the next few days. Thanks.)

I have to tell you that I am a ‘huge’ fan of Crocs. If you have never tried them, you should really slip on a pair of these fantastic feeling shoes. I am a diabetic, type 2, so I have to be very, (and I mean very) careful of my feet. They have to be in extremely comfortable shoes whenever I can, and that means that I virtually live in my Crocs.

If you have worn Crocs before, and have strayed away from these delightful forms of footwear, hurry back to a Crocs store and take a look at how much the company has expanded their line. Now, you may be asking me an obvious question here. What does Crocs footwear have to do with healthy computing? Easy! The more comfortable your footwear is, the more motivated you will be to move those feet, especially if it feels like your walking on puffing marshmallows.

The accompanying video of myself showing you a few different styles should only wet your appetite. These shoes are the most comfortable things I have ever slipped on my feet. I can stand on concrete for over 8 hours a day and not get sore feet, calves, knees, hips or back aches. There are styles of Crocs that are dressy enough to ware with semi-casual clothes, right up to dress pants and they look like they fit right in.

The old saying goes, ‘if your feet hurt, you hurt all over’ and that makes sense, especially to me, a reflexologist. Your feet have over 7200 nerve endings that travel all over your body and not having comfortable footwear can make life a drudgery. At Christmas, I showed my Crocs to a few of the male family members. One of them laced them up, took two steps and said ‘where can I buy a pair of these?’. Another colleague of mine did some research on the Crocs shoe brand, and he said that he can almost always find something negative about a product on the internet, but told me that there was not one bad report regarding these shoes.

Click on this link to see what Doctor’s are saying about Crocs.

Crocs is also on twitter, click on this link.
Here is a blog concerning womens fitness. They seem to really, really love their Crocs.
And what kind of blogger/podcaster would I be if I didn’t share the Crocs Blog with you.

If you would like to stay informed about what Crocs is up to. Here is the link to Croc Shoe News. I have also copied the main reasons you should seriously look at a pair of these shoes.
1. They are extremely light

OK, I get that Canada simply does not have the population that the United States does, and therefore (so I have been told) that it is the biggest reason for price differences in Canada, but, please! Someone better get a grip, and grip it soon. Let me give you a shining example of this. Last month, my loving wife said that she wanted to change the interior layout of the home. (These words strike fear into any mans heart, and usually means that we spend several hours placing, replacing then positioning all of the furniture in one, two, three or four rooms, then, after working up a sweat, stubbing your toes on the coffee table that you moved 4 times, the little woman decides that everything needs to go back into its original position)

We (that being “She”) needed to have all of the furniture from the family room moved into the dining room, and visa versa. Thats fine. It’s just that we have Omnicam 6 ceiling speakers for our home theater, and that means that if you move all of your audio video equipment (yes you guessed correctly) your going to have to move all 7 speakers, re-cut holes in the ceiling in another room, then patch the original holes. Oh yea, not to mention that seven complete sets of 12 gauge speaker wire must now be snaked through another wall, then, move the speaker blocks that took you hours to set up. It would have been less costly and less frustrating for me to just take out one wall, and make the entire upper floor an open floor concept. I could sit in one room, and see the TV from the other. Too bad the wife doesn’t see it that way.

So lets get back to my rant and rave. I had a satellite installer come over to the house because we needed the dish moved, and the entire system hadn’t had any maintenance for over 12 years and I knew that in time, cables, their connected ends and other equipment that is outside in our climate can start to degrade. After the work was completed, we started talking about the price that we pay for satellite service in Canada. Because he is an installer, he see’s first hand the difference in price between Canada and the United States.

The installer said that he knows first hand why Canadians are upset. For $90.00 per month in Canada that you would pay to one of only two satellite providers, you can get that exact same channel line up, with much more choice for only $30.00 in the US. He said that he hears horror stories quite often about the poor choice and high price we Canucks are forced to pay. It doesn’t just happen with satellite signals. My wife and I were looking for a car for her in 2008. Her Acura had lasted her over 17 years, and was a faithful method of transportation.

We live right next to the US border, and when I say right next to it, we can drive down to the border in under 5 minutes. I phoned the closest Honda dealer just across the border and inquired about a new car. When they found out that we were Canadian, they refused to sell us a new car. They told us that it was to protect the Canadian Honda dealers. My next call was to the Infinity dealer in Phoenix,Arizona because I had heard very good things about the Infinity brand. Within 10 days, we purchased the car from a very polite, and professional salesman and had it delivered to our driveway in BC for a very reasonable charge. There was less than 10 miles on the odometer.

Get this, for the price of a fully loaded CRV in Canada, we got a fully loaded Infinity for the same price. Any questions? Nope, I didn’t think so. The price difference was so great that between what the dealer in Canada was asking for the Infinity and the price in the US, we could have purchased another fully loaded sub compact car in the US for me. Thats right. There it is in black and white. There is a disgusting price difference in a majority of what we pay for and what you can pick it up for in the US. I was talking to a woman a few months ago and she said that she bought her brand new diesel truck in the US, and saved close to $20,000 and she regularly goes across the line to the US costco, pays 30 to 40% less for here groceries, then, fills her truck up with fuel, and saves again at the fuel pump. She said Rick, how would you like a 30% raise in your paycheck. I said I would love it. She said OK, go across the line into the US for all your groceries, electronics, fuel, automotive needs or anything else that you can purchase, and there you have it.

That statement hit me like a ton of bricks. Pick almost anything that you would purchase in Canada, then compare it to the price in the US. I think you will be amazed at the price difference. I just heard from an acquaintance of mine that his father just bought a Jaguar in the states. It was last years model, but still brand new. The difference in price was $30,000.
When my wife and I were insuring her new car, the insurance agent told us that she had clients that left just 30 minutes before we got there, and they purchased a brand new motor home in the United States and saved over $50,000. Now, lets do some simple math shall we? If these folks are planning to full time in their brand new rig, and they now have an extra $50,000 because they bought in the US rather than in Canada, two people can easily live on $25,000 for one year if your rig is paid for, these lucky campers now have two full and complete years that they can spend travelling and having the time of their lives.

Please let me entertain you with another true story that happens in Canada. There is a new telephone company called Wind Mobile, and here is a wonderful comment from a page I found commenting on the new wireless phone provider, I will supply the link to the web site HERE, and the comment below.
The title of this comment is:WIND Already Benefited Me
I had just opened a new account with Rogers for my wife’s phone last week and called Rogers within the 14 days to cancel stating that WIND was cheaper knowing that I would go right to Cust retention. Got them on the phone and knocked $20 off her bill /mo.

It does my heart good to see us ‘polite Canadians’ getting just a little hot under the collar. I think competition is great for everyone. We have had a monopoly in many areas for far too long in almost every service and or goods provider I can think of……… except medical. Well, thats where Canada shines. I love our medical system. It works better than a lot of other countries, and if we can strike a good balance with a two tier system, then we at least have learned how to properly manage one part of a medical service provider business model.

Below is one of the best questions and answers I have seen about the price differences.
Resolved QuestionShow me another »
Why is everything more expensive in Canada than in the US?
I look at all the products here in the US such as books, and they are marked with the prices for the US, and the prices for Canada. But I always find the Canadian price to be higher. Why is that so?

There are three main reasons for this difference: taxation, economies of scale, and distribution costs. Because Canada has a better social welfare system than the US, taxes are higher at all levels and are therefore reflected in consumer product prices. The fact that the US has a population that is 10 times larger than Canada’s means that higher sales volumes are possible and therefore the unit cost is reduced. Lastly, the vast distances between markets (i.e. population centers) in Canada means that distribution costs more; there is not enough critical market mass to set up warehouses or distribution hubs in the larger empty spaces between markets.

I did a podcast a few days ago, and a reader/listener came through with a very positive review on the datahand ergonomic keyboard. He actually took the time to write an excellent article that I will post below. This is why I love to blog/post/podcast about products. People on the internet will usually go to great lengths to offer constructive, real-life and valuable feedback. Take a look at his post below, and feel free to leave a comment for us. Thanks, Rick and Pat. Here is the link to the data-hand website.
Based on 18 years of experience, I think the DataHand keyboard is worth much more than it costs, and in my opinion all the other options are a net negative. I would not want them if you gave them to me for free and paid me thousands of dollars to use them.
Some people want to stick with the antique keyboard paradigm out of cultural habit, but they should not—if they were smart. (The Orbitouch can be valuable for people with certain disabilities, as you noted, but I am not among those.)
Full disclosure: I am a DataHand shareholder, but I am proud of that, because I believe in investing in products I think are offering something important. In addition, I used the product for almost a decade, before I said anything about my experience; I allowed that much time to be sure the product was as valuable as I thought it would be. Nonetheless, it is not without areas where improvements are still needed. For example, its mouse functionality is not as good as it should be, so I supplement it with either a trackpad or a trackball. Other improvements are needed, but for alphanumeric entry the DataHand keyboard is the best there is, especially for people who need to do a large amount of continuous typing every day. Yet, I would not ask people to take my word for anything; people should only to take my view as one person’s opinion to be checked out. There can be reasons why the DataHand keyboard can wrong for some people. Hand size can be an issue for example; people with very large, very small, or unusually shaped hands may not find it right. The keyboard should not be bought on an impulse; it should be studied thoroughly first by reading everything on the company web site as well as everything found through an Internet search. Even then, people will not understand everything, but they will understand enough to get started and enough to know why changing keyboards might be worth the trouble. They will begin to understand what is wrong with the established alternatives—and why.
