Holistic Technology
Right about now we need some further clarification regarding holistic technology terms and the ‘new age’ movement. We are not ‘new age’. I was talking to a fellow the other day about our concept, and it seems that whenever you mention the words ‘holistic’, it can automatically trigger a response in certain religious communities and cause concern. Thats why we purposefully labelled what we do as ‘Holistic Technology’. It was important to us to make a very clear distinction in methods, values, concepts and beliefs. I am a Christian first and foremost. To be more clear, I am a Lutheran. (You know what they say about Lutherans, you can always tell a Lutheran, but you just can’t tell them very much!)
We live in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, and have a very large Mennonite population. They also happen to be Christian based. As a matter of fact, it is my understanding that North America itself was founded on Christian beliefs and concepts. The ‘new age’ movement on the other hand can encompass a wide variety of beliefs that may be more spiritually based than some people feel comfortable with. I’ll give you an example of that. I study Yang style Tai Chi for relaxation purposes. If a person wanted to pursue spiritual guidance through Tai Chi, there is certainly a way to do that. Tai Chi is a form of Kung Fu, and Kung Fu literally ‘the effort of a man’. (I’m not being sexist here, its just the way it is translated)
I really love what the late Bruce Lee meant when he said ‘absorb what is useful, and discard the rest’. When I practice Tai Chi, it reminds me how to completely and thoroughly relax and allow something to happen, rather than forcing it to happen as we tend to do in the modern western world. I can take the best parts of Tai Chi that work for me, use it for a specific purpose and don’t have to become completely encompassed in any other areas of the Tai Chi system. I use what I need and can incorporate it into my own personal belief system without an internal conflict.
Lets present another idea. Have you ever been to a Chiropractor? If you have, you have dealt with someone who believes in a ‘holistic’ method of healing. Have you ever had acupuncture or acupressure? If you have, once again you have experienced a form of ‘holistic’ medicine. Now, when you go to the Chiropractor or an acupuncturist they don’t sit you down and have a deep conversation about the ‘new age’ movement. Their intention is to heal you physically. When you are healed physically, many times your mental and emotional health follow the lead and you can generally be a much happier person. Look at how popular Yoga has become. Millions of people practice Yoga without becoming a Yogi master and adopting any eastern religious beliefs.
The word ‘holistic’ just means complete or entire. The healthy tech talk program looks at the ‘complete or entire’ environment that the computer user must work in, then brings choices regarding ergonomic furniture and supplies to the computer user. We also include diet, exercise, lighting, stretch break software, air quality, as well as products that may prevent injury. For example, in our product reviews we discuss the importance of a good quality headset/microphone combination that can improve productivity. Our program is totally devoted to items, goods and services to help the user of technology cope with modern day stress.
Thats what ‘Holistic Technology’ is all about. We felt that this clarification was important enough to put up on our blog, and hopefully it presents a more definitive picture of our program. We welcome your comments on our blog. Please feel free to take a few moments and enter in your opinion of any of our pages or blogs. Thanks for stopping by. Rick and Pat.
Here is a video explaining how we are going to break the program down into nice little bite sized chunks.
